people/place/occasion

"articulate the in-between." -Aldo van Eyck

how do you feel about expressing the "in-between" in your designs? like Eyck, do you feel that its the in-between that we experience and relate to and that place and occasion mean more than space and time?

The "in-between" is a vital component of architecture. If we disregard the details, have we not failed as designers? Eyck says "whoever attempts to solve the riddle of space in the abstract will construct the outline of emptiness and call it space." We should focus attention to the details in full and create a "place" that becomes more personal to the people that reside, rather than just a "space" to live. I think time and occasion may be enhanced by "place" not simply "space." It is when the details have been articulated that we create "place" and disregard to such is simply "space."

it is in the details that we as designers 'solve the riddle,' and in this, place becomes more important than space. it's the in between that connects people to our designs.
